When he was just a teenager, Ryan Hurst made his television debut by playing the doughy and tall Crunch Grabowski in a minor role. Throughout the rest of the 1990’s, Hurst would continue to make smaller appearances in shows such as “JAG”, “Wings” and “Boston Common”, as well as movies like “Patch Adams” and “Saving Private Ryan”.

The 2000’s saw an expansion in Hurst’s roles, and it appeared that he got into better shape. With films such as “Remember the Titans” and “We Were Soldiers”, it looked like Hurst was going to be heading toward stardom. Over the years, however, some of the weight had come back on, but that didn’t stop Hurst from landing his biggest role yet. In 2008, he joined the cast of “Sons of Anarchy”, playing Opie Winston for more than 50 episodes. In more recent years, Hurst has been a regular on the series “Bates Motel” and “Outsiders”.

In the first season of “Sons of Anarchy”, Hurst was around the highest weight that he’d been at before, with some saying that he had a “homely” look, but he wasn’t a series regular at that point. When the first season was coming to a close, and with the second season around the corner, Hurst made a dramatic change to his own appearance, affecting his character.

Hurst became a regular on the cast, and some fans of the show even wondered aloud if Hurst had developed a drug problem, lending theories to his changing look and how it came to be so sudden. As it turned out, everything seemed to be going just fine in Hurst’s life, and he was making a change to his physique as part of the character’s story arc.

As the character of Opie was promoted to becoming a member of the club in “Sons of Anarchy”, he showed a strong sense of commitment that even included his personal appearance. Even with the handful of rumors and fan theories that Hurst was developing a drug problem, it appeared that Hurst was healthier than ever and enjoying his new lifestyle.

The change was an important one for Hurst, who described the character of Opie being a “rock between a rock and a hard place,” that had to show strength both physically and mentally. Among some large actors, Hurst didn’t want to look like a pushover. Even at 6’4” and over 200 pounds, there was some stiff competition. After all, being in a motorcycle gang brings out some pretty tough people, and Hurst (along with his character) had to compete to stay among the top.

Though Hurst wasn’t asked point blank about his weight loss, the fact that he spent so much time with “Sons of Anarchy” co-star Charlie Hunnam off the set gave us a glimpse into his possible workouts. Hunnam reportedly does a full body workout that include pull ups, dips, squats and push-ups on a daily basis, with ab workouts thrown in for good measure. Looking at the type of change that Hurst went through, it’s definitely feasible to think that he was borrowing Hunnam’s successful workout.

That type of workout only takes around 60 minutes to do, according to Hunnam, who also said that a good diet is the most important thing about weight loss and muscle building. Even though the two are no longer working together, it seems that Hurst has taken some of his co-star’s advice and stayed in tremendous shape. Most recently, he was showcased as the star of the WGN series “Outsiders” playing Lil Foster Farrell. The series was cancelled after two seasons, but demanded a lot of physicality from Hurst.

Hurst has changed his appearance from the “Sons of Anarchy” days, though. Now, he’s sporting a large beard and long hair, even though the rest of his body looks relatively the same. According to his social media, one of the ways that Hurst is staying in shape is by doing some yoga exercises to build muscle. It clearly seems to be working as the large 6’4” actor is in tremendous shape at 41 years old. Looking healthier, younger and more fit in your 40’s than you did in your 30’s is no easy task, but doing so ensures that your career will keep going for quite some time.

With both “Outsiders” and “Bates Motel” coming to an end in 2017, it will be interesting to see what the next step is for Hurst. As imposing as he is, there’s little doubt that he’ll still be in high demand as he maintains his weight loss. There’s a lot of room in Hollywood for large and imposing actors that can command respect out of their characters, and that’s certainly been the norm for Hurst’s characters since his career started more than 20 years ago.
