In 2012, the TLC network debuted an interesting new show called “Breaking Amish”. In this series, a group of young Amish people move to New York City during Rumspringa, when 16 year olds are allowed to go into the outside world and experience non-Amish culture, ending with them deciding if they want to ultimately live an Amish life or stay away from it. The Schmucker family had been featured prominently, including young Abe Schmucker. His mother, Mary, became a fan favorite among the show’s viewers.

Mary has had to face some trials and tribulations among the Amish community, and was even shunned by her church. This has allowed her to embrace more of the everyday lifestyle that many of us are accustomed to, which included buying her own car. You may have also noticed that Schmucker has lost some weight along the way.

Early on in the series, viewers were commenting about Mary’s weight. One fan said that she “is in dangerous territory with her weight and her eating habits and that alcohol consumption. She is working on slow suicide if she doesn’t drop that weight and watch her blood pressure and blood sugar.” Not even two years after making that comment, the fan was right to be concerned about Mary’s weight.

Schmucker was admitted to the hospital in early 2015, and it turned out that she had a hernia. Her son, Abe, said on social media posted to fans saying that she had to go through surgery to correct the hernia. Mary even admitted while in the hospital that she had to work on her heart health. This included cutting down on the drinking and trying to work in some regular exercise.

It’s been more than two years since then, and Schmucker’s health appears to be improving. She did have a setback in 2017 when she broke her ankle in three different places, though she didn’t say how it happened. An injury like that can certainly hamper weight loss efforts, but there are still plenty of ways to continue losing weight, and most of it happens in the kitchen.

Speaking of the kitchen, these days Schmucker is also working on selling cookbooks and Tupperware along with her family. It appears that Schmucker has been trying out some of her healthier recipes as it’s estimated that she’s lost 50 pounds since “Breaking Amish” first debuted more than five years ago. It’s not the most drastic transformation as Schmucker is still estimated to be 200 pounds, but that certainly puts her in a much healthier spot than before.

In a 2017 episode of “Return to Amish”, Schmucker even showcased some of her weight loss while on the beach with former Amish community member Carmela Mendez. The two were showcased shopping for bathing suits, which was something that Schmucker really wasn’t used to. Even the young Mendez wasn’t prepared to go shopping, and Schmucker was happy to accommodate.

Schmucker said “We were at the beach and I saw Carmela had, like, a long-sleeve shirt, so I asked her if she minds having a ladies’ day out and we’ll go shopping…I definitely think Carmela should show off some of her skin because she’s pretty, she’s not Amish and she can!” Schmucker didn’t find something that she really liked for herself when perusing through the swimsuits, however. “I can’t believe people wear that to the beach. That’s for the bedroom,” she said of one bathing suit.

You probably won’t be spotting Schmucker in a two-piece bikini on the beach anytime soon, but she has no problem with getting out there in public and having a great time. Confidence has never really been an issue with Schmucker, who has embraced the ups and downs in her life which include her weight. The most recent season of “Return to Amish” also has her strolling around Las Vegas and even going into ladies’ clubs.

It’s hard to tell what the future brings for Schmucker, who seemingly goes in and out of the Amish community. Before breaking her ankle, she was adding in some walking to increase her exercise levels and remain healthy, and she still identifies as Amish despite the previous shunning. Either way, she seems to maintain a level of happiness no matter her weight or social standing, continuing to be one of reality television’s diamonds in the rough that seemingly came out of nowhere. Once she gets the cast off, perhaps she can start training with former “Return to Amish” star Kate Stoltz, who frequently runs in distance races. Schmucker says not to get your hopes up, but you never know!
