Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson didn’t have the easiest upbringing, having to sell drugs to make ends meet in the late 1980’s in Queens, New York. Jackson decided that that kind of life wasn’t for him anymore, and went into the music business. His career hit a snag early on when he was shot nine times in 2000, but survived the incident and bounced back quickly. Two years later, Jackson’s music was heard by Eminem, and it landed him a record deal.

In 2003, Jackson released his first album “Get Rich or Die Tryin’”, which was one of the best selling rap albums ever. Jackson has been a star in the rap game since, releasing several albums and starting his own record label, G-Unit Records. Jackson has also gotten into acting, with his first role being the biography of his life named after his debut album, and he has also starred in “Southpaw” and “Popstar” recently.

While there are a lot of celebrities out there that have been overweight due to poor eating habits, Jackson was only technically overweight due to his exercise routine. Jackson had always been chubby growing up, then was thin during his teenage years and then decided to pack on some muscle when he became an adult so that he could help defend himself. That was until his shooting in 2000, with the bullets passing through his cheeks.

Jackson’s weight dropped down to 157 pounds because he could not eat any solid foods. Once he recovered from the shooting, Jackson was able to eat solids again and started going back to the gym. A renewed lease on life and the willingness to become a star pushed Jackson to the point where he was in fantastic shape. He got up to about 214 pounds, carrying a lot of muscle. Jackson had plans on maintaining that shape until he got a casting call for the movie “Things Fall Apart”.

The movie chronicled the life of Jackson’s childhood friend who passed away after a battle with cancer. To resemble someone with cancer, Jackson had to go on a crash diet to lose all of the muscle that he worked so hard to put on. He admitted that it was harder to drop to 160 pounds than the first time he did it since he had no choice before thanks to a liquid diet.

“I had to discipline myself not…to actually have myself be in the physical state to convey the energy I felt. It’s a passion project for me,” he said. Jackson got back on the liquid diet that got him down to his lowest weight before, and he was having trouble sticking to it for the movie role, admitting “This time it was a lot tougher for me.” He attempted to return to the liquid diet and run on the treadmill for up to three hours each day, but it was hard to sustain.

Unlike most celebrities that drop a lot of weight for a role, Jackson wasn’t expecting to take home any awards for the movie since he only wanted to make it for his departed friend, saying that a win “would be a surprise.” After the shooting was over, Jackson started to put the weight back on and said that it felt incredibly different.

Jackson only took nine weeks to drop his weight down to 160 pounds, and it didn’t take that much longer to put it all back on. However, making sure that it was all muscle was not the easiest. While he was regaining the weight that he lost, Jackson said that “I feel like a fat boy…I’m a blimp lol.”

That was five years ago, and since then Jackson has been able to regain his healthier physique at 41 years old. Jackson is also sharing his workout plans with people, and he even recently released a book called Formula 50 that shows his fans how to get into the same shape that he is. Jackson is a huge fan of boxing, and wanted that to be his career if rapping didn’t work out. For that reason, Jackson trains like a boxer would and it really shows.
